Nominal capacity is the tank's rated size, not what it holds in service. A 275-gallon tank is normally filled to about 90 % — roughly 940 L — to leave ullage for thermal expansion.

Do not add decimals your meter cannot produce. A ticket printed to 0.1 gal does not become more accurate by being reported to 0.001 L.

The 231 in³ figure is inherited, not invented. It is the old English wine gallon standardised under Queen Anne, adopted by the United States and then frozen into US law, which is why the US gallon and the imperial gallon parted company rather than converging.

Rounding: how much precision do you actually need?

The common shortcuts are fine at small volumes and quietly wrong at large ones. The error is proportional, so it scales with the tank.

Rule of thumb: 3.785 is enough for anything you can carry, 3.78541 is enough for any tank, and the full factor costs nothing if a calculator is doing the work.

Volume is not quantity. Converting gallons to litres converts a volume at whatever temperature it happened to be. Petroleum expands roughly 0.07 % per °C, so 1,000 L of diesel at 35 °C is about 986 L once corrected to a 15 °C reference. FAQ

How many liters are in a US gallon?

Exactly 3.785411784 L. The value is exact rather than measured: a US gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches, and an inch is defined as 2.54 cm, so the litre figure is pure arithmetic.

Is 3.785 accurate enough?

For almost everything, yes. Truncating to 3.785 understates the result by about 0.011 %, which is 0.1 L on a 275-gallon oil tank and 8 L on a 20,000-gallon storage tank. If either of those matters, use the full factor.

Why is the imperial gallon a different size?

Because it has a different legal definition. The UK Weights and Measures Act 1985 fixes the imperial gallon at 4.54609 litres, while the US gallon descends from the 231-cubic-inch wine gallon. One imperial gallon is about 1.2 US gallons — a 20 % gap that shows up whenever UK, Irish or older Canadian tank specs are read as US figures.

Does the conversion change with temperature?

The conversion does not; the liquid does. 3.785411784 L per gallon is true at any temperature because both units are defined geometrically. What changes is how much mass occupies that volume, which is why fuel is traded on volume corrected to a reference temperature of 60 °F or 15 °C.

What about US dry gallons?

A US dry gallon is about 4.405 L and is used for grain and produce, not liquids. If a spec says just “gallons” for a liquid in a US context, it means US liquid gallons.
