Catalog 49500 (portable DOT LPG cylinders) (09/2022); Manchester Tank, Steel Tanks & Cylinders for LP Gas Systems, Portable Steel Tanks Catalog 49501 (2020) (200 and 420 lb). Full = empty weight + the rated propane weight, about 42 % of water capacity, the DOT filling limit for propane. Manchester's 2020 catalog lists the 100 lb slightly differently; see its page.

Pounds, not gallons

Portable cylinders are named by the propane they hold when filled to the DOT limit, so a 20 lb cylinder holds 20 lb of propane and weighs about twice that full. Stationary tanks from 120 gallons up are named by water capacity instead.

For those larger horizontal tanks, see the 120, 250, 500 and 1,000 gallon pages, or the propane tank calculator.

FAQ

What sizes do propane cylinders come in?

Manchester Tank's DOT cylinders run 5, 10, 11, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 100 lb, plus 200 lb and 420 lb in its larger catalog. The number is the propane they hold, not the weight of the tank.

Why is the 20 lb tank the same width as the 30 and 40 lb?

They share a 12.2 in shell and differ in height: 18, 23.4 and 29.4 in on Manchester's sheet. Check the height before swapping one size for another in a grill cabinet.
