Stock tank sizes, dimensions & gallons

Galvanized round, round-end and poly stock tanks from Behlen Country, Tarter and Rubbermaid Commercial — the manufacturers' own dimensions and capacities, plus the gallons each inch of depth holds.

Round tank of a size not listed here? The vertical tank volume calculator gives gallons at any water depth.

10 ft round stock tank

The largest standard galvanized tank. Behlen Country's model 50130188 (sold as 10×2) is 120 in across and 23.5 in high, rated 1,117 gallons. Brim-full, that geometry holds 1,151 gal; each inch of depth is worth about 49 gallons. Full, the water alone weighs about 9,321 lb — put it on level, compacted ground, not on a slope where one side carries the load.

Tarter's largest round galvanized tank is 8 ft (WTR82, 700 gal); in poly, Tarter's DuraTough range goes to a 1,300-gallon 10 ft round.

Round-end (oval) galvanized tanks

Sold as height × width × length in feet: a “2×2×8” is 2 ft high, 2 ft wide and 8 ft long. The ends are half-circles, so the footprint is a rectangle plus one full circle of the tank's width.

Tarter's catalog lists the WT328 “Oval Mega 300” at 96 × 24 × 24 in — the same as the 220-gallon WT228. A 24-inch-wide tank that size holds about 230 gallons, so the printed width looks like a catalog error (300 gallons needs about 36 in, as on Behlen's 3×2×8). It is left out of the table until Tarter corrects it.

Poly stock tanks

Poly tanks have sloped sides and moulded ribs, so these are overall product dimensions, not a clean geometric shape — use the maker's capacity rather than computing from them.

How these figures are worked out

Round tank
gal = 0.0034 × D² × H  (inches)
Round-end (oval) tank
gal = (π × W² ÷ 4 + W × (L − W)) × H ÷ 231

A US gallon is exactly 231 cubic inches. The “geometry” column applies these to the maker's stated dimensions, brim-full. The maker's own figure is usually lower because of the corrugated wall, rolled rim and drain fitting; where it is slightly higher (Behlen's 2×2×5 and 6×2, Tarter's WT226), the published dimensions are rounded. Behlen ships tanks nested inside each other, so the B and C tanks of a nested set are slightly smaller — the figures here are for the largest (A) version.

FAQ

How many gallons is a 10 ft stock tank?

Behlen Country's 10 ft galvanized round tank (model 50130188, 120 in diameter × 23.5 in high) is rated 1,117 gallons. Each inch of depth holds about 49 gallons, and full it carries roughly 9.3 thousand lb (4.7 tons) of water.

What size is a 2×2×8 stock tank?

The trade name is height × width × length in feet. Behlen's 2×2×8 round-end tank is 94.25 in long, 26 in wide and 23.5 in high and holds 224 gallons; Tarter's equivalent (WT228) is 96 × 24 × 24 in and 220 gallons.

What does 3×2×8 or 2×3×8 mean?

The same tank written two ways: 3 ft wide, 2 ft high, 8 ft long. Behlen lists its 3×2×8 at 93 × 36 × 23.5 in and 294 gallons.

How many gallons per inch is my stock tank?

Footprint area in square inches ÷ 231. For a round tank that is 0.0034 × diameter²; for a round-end tank it is (0.785 × W² + W × (L − W)) ÷ 231. Stock tanks have vertical sides, so every inch of depth holds the same amount — see the per-inch column above.

Why is the maker's capacity different from the geometry?

The geometry is brim-full at the stated dimensions. Corrugated walls, the rolled rim and the drain boss take volume out, so the maker's figure is usually 3–15 % lower. A few come out slightly higher, which means the published dimension is rounded. Use the maker's figure for ordering and the per-inch figure for reading a level.
