Granby 330 Gallon Horizontal Oil Tank (205701)

Granby Industries makes steel residential heating-oil tanks in the US and Canada, sold under its own name. Its 275 and 330 gallon UL-80 tanks are the obround (flat-sided oval) shape found in most basements, made for either standing upright (vertical) or lying on their side (horizontal).

What we found checking the maker's documents

  • Granby's product page links a “Capacity Chart for US Horizontal Tanks”, but the file it opens is the chart for vertical tanks, and no horizontal chart is published. The chart here is computed from the printed dimensions; for the upright tank, Granby's own chart runs about 2 % above the same geometry, so expect real readings to be a little higher than this table.

Stick readings at quarter levels

The values use the obround geometry from Granby's printed 27 × 44 × 72 in (322 gal brim-full). Granby's own vertical chart reads about 2% above the same geometry, so real values can be a little higher.

Full weight

Granby prints a tank weight of 290 lb. At a typical fill of 300 gal of heating oil at 7.2 lb/gal, the oil weighs 2,160 lb. The total is about 2,450 lb on the four legs.

How to stick this tank

  1. Remove the fill cap on the top of the tank.
  2. Put a clean wooden stick into the tank until it touches the bottom. Keep the stick vertical.
  3. Remove the stick and read the wet line in inches.
  4. Find the reading in the chart above. The tank is 27 in deep, so the chart stops at 27 in.
  5. Install the cap again.

Do not use a vertical-tank chart. At 12 in, a horizontal 275 holds about 117 gal, but a vertical 275 holds about 64 gal.
